How to Prepare for Your Home Inspection

There are a number of matters homeowners can attend to in order to help the residence inspection go easily and ensure a great result:

  • Making sure all utilities (electrical, water and gasoline) are turned on on
  • Exchanging burned out bulbs and faulty switches
  • Repairing/replacing broken, damaged or missing important security items like to door knobs, locks, damaged window glass, window screens and many others
  • Having all Heating and Cooling equipment serviced, and cleaning or changing air filters
  • Cleansing rain gutters and making certain downspouts are accurately connected and draining away from your foundation
  • Ensure that pilot lights for water heaters, fireplaces, etc. are all lit
  • Move any stored objects away from your home’s foundation and garage walls
  • Clear below cupboard areas and sinks to prepare for plumbing fixture inspections
  • Don’t use fireplaces the day earlier than and day of the inspection; your fireplace needs to be cool and clean for inspection
  • Pets need to be restrained or removed from the residence for the entire length of the inspection
  • Place soiled dishes within the dishwasher with detergent as the inspector will run it as part of the inspection
  • Take down locks from gates or fences, closets, panel doors and so on
  • Dispose of objects that can restrict access or motion in attic or crawlspace
  • Ensure the electrical panel is obtainable
  • Deactivate all safety alarm systems
